1940’s & 1950’s fashion for women

When you think of 50’s and 40’s fashion, think long skirts and dresses, but for casual wear mini shorts. Also, tight fitted clothes – both for casual wear and parties, neutral colors – not too strong or over powering, romantic, classy, timeless cuts, focus on shoulders and collarbone, always a pair of stilletos – for winter or summer. In the 40s fashion was a bit more practical, whereas the 50s more feminine outfits were in style, cigarette pants, heeled sandals and lots of headscarves. In the 40’s fashion for women was more “masculine”, more structured – in the 50’s came a more soft and flowy vibe.

1960’s & 1970’s fashion for women

In the 60’s and 70s came the mini skirts and dresses, floral prints and more flowy and soft fabrics. Also more colors were introduced and more girly vibes, with pastel colors and even colorful jewelry. there also came a wave of rock-style fashion, with leather jackets, black eyemakeup and more of a “masculine” style compared to the decades before.

1980s Women’s Fashion

In the 80′ fashion piggy backed off of the colors from the 70s – but became more strong – think neon colors, athletic clothing (style was more similar to 40’s, as we know fashion is circular) with structured shoulders, emphasis on shoulders, loose fitted clothing and practical yet fun outfits and with some of the 70’s rock fashion still in style.

1990’s & 00’s fashion for women

With some of the 80s still hanging on, the 90s and 00’s were still colorful and practical and comfortable, with matching tracksuit outfit in pink or turquoise, leggings and an oversized sweatshirt or lots of stripes. But there came a wave of switching from very loose clothing to crop tops, low waitsted and tight pants and short dresses and skirt, leaving little to the imagination. Back then the style needed to be casual but still feminine, showing lots of skin and using delicate fabrics, nothing too chunky or thick – except maybe the occasional loose pants (inspired from the hip hop music world) or the big buffalo shoes.

In many ways fashion today draws on so many of the styles we have seen here. It also depends on what generation you look at, teens and young adults seem to be drawn tro very loose fitted clotrhing or pairing loose pants with a small tight top similar to the 90’s and 00’s. Millenials might go for long skirts and a big knit paired with some long sneakers or boots. Some might wear wide set jeans from the 70s or a long structured trenchcoat in the style of the 40s. One of the rarest looks we see are the pencil skirts or sundresses from the 50’s and 60’s, it has such a particular look – very feminine, that it seems like it might be too “womanly” for most people and draw too much attention to the body or simply look too girly.
