MATERIALS
Any yarn or hook you like.
I will recommend using a small hook + fine yarn – preferably a yarn with a little stretch or in wool or yarn that is durable (for instance with some polyester)

Add/subtract about 25 grams per size (4 cm) going up/down:

I have used for this pattern (size 38-39):

Brown socks: 58 grams of cotton/wool yarn in size 3, DK/worsted and a 6 mm hook, yardage: 50 g = 100 m (brand: Natur Flame)
Lilac/pink socks: 66 grams of alpaca/acrylic yarn in size 2, sport, and a 3 mm hook, yardage: 50 g = 160 m (brand: Soft Alpakka)
White socks I used 3 kinds of yarn and size 6 mm hook and 4,5 mm hook.
Grey socks I used Scheepjes Our Tribe wool and 3 mm hook with a knit-inspired stitch.
