Free pattern guide: How to crochet long cardigan with sleeves and mesh stitch

Start by following Calliope top to make the body of the cardigan. Then come back here and follow the steps.

For my size M/L I used 275 g yarn (5,5 yarn balls of 50 g each)

  1. Use the same yarn but a bigger hook. If you used 4 mm then use a 6 mm for the body. If you used a 3 mm then switch to a 5 mm.
  2. Insert the hook in the corner of the top and make double crochet while following the same method for the mesh stitches on the top (above the bust where you decreased). But instead of decreasing you increase by making 1 extra stitch in the same stitch (in the beginning/end of the row).
  3. Make sure your first row has a number of stitches is an odd number, to match the stitch pattern.
  4. Also when you make the mesh row you still make dc.
  5. You can continue with dc or switch to treble crochet for all of the stitches after 9 rows.
  6. Continue with rows and increasing until you have enough width for your hips – try it on.
  7. Stop the increases and continue with length until you are satisfied. I have 33 rows in total.
  8. Then finish with a sc edge for the vertical edge of the cardigan by making 2 sc per stitch.
  9. Break off and move on to the sleeves

Still using 6 mm hook insert the hook in the armpit and chain 2. Make dc and the same stitch pattern as before. Make 1 dc per row in the armhole + 1 stitch on the shoulder and/or the armpit. Just make sure the number is an even number, to match the stitch pattern. I had 40 stitches
Finish each round by making 1 ss in 1st dc in the round, ch 2 and turn (turning chains).

On the mesh round you start with 2 ch, 1 dc in the first dc, ch 1, skip one stitch. And end the round with: ch 1, skip the last stitch, make 1 ss in the first dc in the round.
When you reach the mesh row just make sure you count how many holes you have, so that every time you make the mesh row you make sure to make the same amount of holes. Continue making rows on the sleeves until you have enough length – try it on. I had 24 rows.
